1. Our Commitment to Responsible Gambling
At Elmariscourt, we believe that gambling should be an enjoyable, voluntary leisure activity. We are committed to providing a safe and well-managed gaming environment within our casino, and we take our duty of care to every guest seriously. This page sets out the measures we have put in place, the support available to anyone who may need it, and the resources offered by Australian public authorities for those who wish to seek independent guidance.
Our responsible gambling framework applies to all guests who use the gaming facilities at our Ballina property and reflects our ongoing obligations under New South Wales and Commonwealth law. supports a culture where play remains within each person's personal control and where those who experience difficulty can access practical assistance promptly and without stigma.
2. Adult-Only Access to Gaming Areas
Entry to all gaming areas at Elmariscourt is strictly restricted to persons aged 18 years or older. This requirement is a legal obligation and a cornerstone of our responsible gambling policy. No exceptions are made regardless of circumstances.
Age Verification
Our trained staff are authorised to request valid photographic proof of age from any guest who appears to be under 25 years of age, or at any time when there is reasonable doubt about a guest's age. Acceptable forms of identification include:
- A current Australian driver licence or learner's permit bearing a photograph and date of birth
- An Australian passport or a passport issued by any foreign government
- A current Australian government-issued proof-of-age card
- A current Australian or foreign government identity card bearing a photograph and date of birth
Any guest who is unable to produce satisfactory identification when asked will be politely refused entry to gaming areas. A guest who produces false or borrowed documentation may be removed from the premises and may be the subject of a report to the relevant authority. Parents and guardians are reminded that they are responsible for ensuring minors do not enter gaming areas.
Supervision of Children
Children and young persons under 18 may not enter, or remain in, gaming areas at any time. Elmariscourt staff are required to act immediately if a minor is observed in, or attempting to enter, a gaming area. We ask all adult guests to assist us by not bringing children into restricted zones and by informing a staff member if they observe a minor in a gaming area unsupervised.
3. Keeping Gambling Voluntary
Gambling at Elmariscourt is entirely optional. Our gaming facilities exist as one leisure option among many within the property. We encourage every guest to approach gambling as a form of entertainment, played for enjoyment rather than as a means of generating income or recovering money previously spent.
Before entering the gaming area, we invite guests to consider the following principles:
- Set a budget before you play. Decide in advance how much money you are comfortable spending on entertainment and treat that amount as the total cost of the experience.
- Accept that losses are possible. Gaming outcomes are determined by chance. There is no system, strategy or pattern that guarantees a win, and past results do not influence future outcomes.
- Play for entertainment, not profit. Approaching gambling as a source of income increases the risk of spending beyond your means.
- Gamble only with money you can afford to lose. Never use funds required for household essentials, savings or the financial needs of others.
- Keep gambling in balance with other activities. A wide range of leisure options is available throughout the Elmariscourt property.
4. Setting Time and Spending Limits
One of the most effective ways to maintain control over gambling is to decide, before play begins, precisely how much time and money you are prepared to spend. Elmariscourt supports and encourages guests to use the following practical tools.
Spending Limits
| Approach | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Session Budget | Bring only the cash or funds you have pre-committed to spending. Leave other payment methods secured in your room or vehicle so that additional funds are not readily accessible. |
| Daily or Visit Limit | Decide on a maximum amount per visit or per day. Once that amount is spent, leave the gaming area. Do not return to access additional funds. |
| Win Limit | Set a target winning amount at which you will stop playing and withdraw. Continuing to play after a win can quickly erode any gain. |
| Loss Limit | Set a maximum loss amount. If you reach this figure, stop playing for the session regardless of how you feel in the moment. |
Time Limits
Time can pass quickly in a gaming environment. We recommend guests:
- Set an alarm or use a watch to track how long they have been playing.
- Decide on a finish time before entering the gaming area and commit to leaving at that time.
- Take note of clock displays and natural light cues within the property.
- Ask a trusted companion to remind them when an agreed time has elapsed.
Guests may speak with a member of our gaming staff at any time if they would like to discuss the voluntary limit-setting options available at the property. All such conversations are handled discreetly and respectfully.
5. Recognising the Warning Signs
For some people, gambling can become difficult to control over time. The following changes in behaviour and thinking are commonly associated with gambling that may be moving beyond a person's control. This list is provided as a general awareness guide only.
- Spending more money on gambling than originally intended, on a regular basis.
- Spending more time gambling than planned, or feeling unable to stop when intended.
- Thinking about gambling frequently when not playing — for example, planning the next session or reliving past play.
- Gambling to recover money that has been lost, sometimes called "chasing losses".
- Neglecting work, study, family commitments or personal responsibilities due to time spent gambling.
- Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling.
- Feeling restless, irritable or unsettled when not gambling or when attempting to reduce play.
- Concealing gambling activity or the amounts spent from family members, friends or others.
- Continuing to gamble despite being aware that it is causing financial, personal or relationship difficulties.
- Using gambling as a way to avoid or manage stress, low mood or other personal difficulties.
If you recognise any of these patterns in yourself, or in someone close to you, we encourage you to take a break, speak with a member of our team, and consider the support options described in the sections below.
6. Taking Breaks During Play
Regular breaks from gambling are a straightforward and effective way to maintain perspective, check in with your budget and time plan, and ensure that play remains an active, considered choice rather than a habit. Elmariscourt actively supports guests who wish to take breaks during gaming sessions.
We encourage guests to:
- Step away from the gaming area at regular intervals — at least once per hour is a sensible practice.
- Use break time to review how much has been spent against the session budget.
- Eat, rest and hydrate during breaks to maintain clear decision-making.
- Engage with other areas of the property during breaks to maintain a healthy balance of activities.
- Reflect honestly during each break on whether returning to play remains a comfortable and informed choice.
Our gaming staff will never encourage a guest to return to play. If you tell a staff member that you are taking a break or that you have finished for the day, they will respect that decision without question.
7. Property Self-Exclusion
Elmariscourt operates a voluntary self-exclusion programme that allows any guest to formally request that they be prohibited from entering the gaming areas of this property for a nominated period. This programme is available to any person, at any time, without the need to provide a reason.
How to Apply
To apply for self-exclusion, please approach any member of our gaming management team in person, or contact us in writing at:
Responsible Gambling Programme
Email: privacy@elmariscourt.com
A senior member of our team will meet with you privately and in confidence to complete the necessary documentation. The process is straightforward and does not require you to disclose personal financial information or any sensitive details beyond those needed to process the exclusion.
Duration and Renewal
Self-exclusion agreements are available for a minimum period of three months. Longer periods — including indefinite exclusion — are available on request. At the end of the nominated exclusion period, the agreement does not automatically lapse; a guest who wishes to end the exclusion must formally request reinstatement in person, following a cooling-off period determined by our gaming management team. We may decline a reinstatement request at our sole discretion if we believe that lifting the exclusion is not in the guest's best interests.
Effect of Exclusion
While a self-exclusion agreement is in place:
- The excluded person will be refused entry to all gaming areas at the Elmariscourt property.
- Our staff will take reasonable steps to identify and remove an excluded person found in a gaming area.
- Any winnings or credits held by an excluded person who enters a gaming area in breach of the agreement may be withheld in accordance with applicable law.
- The exclusion applies to the Elmariscourt property only and does not automatically extend to any other venue.
We remind guests that self-exclusion is most effective when combined with other support measures. Our team can provide information about local public support services at the time of application.
Confidentiality
All self-exclusion applications and agreements are treated with strict confidentiality. Information is retained only for as long as necessary to administer the exclusion and is handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable Australian privacy law. For further information, please refer to our Privacy Policy at elmariscourt.com/privacy-policy or write to us at privacy@elmariscourt.com.
8. Support from Trusted Contacts
Family members, close friends and other trusted contacts often play an important role in helping a person recognise and address gambling-related difficulties. Elmariscourt welcomes approaches from trusted contacts who have concerns about a guest's gambling behaviour.
What Trusted Contacts Can Do
- Speak to our team. A trusted contact who has concerns about a family member or friend may request a confidential conversation with our gaming management team. We will listen respectfully and explain the options available under our responsible gambling programme.
- Request information. We can provide general written information about our responsible gambling measures and the support services available in Australia.
- Support a self-exclusion application. A trusted contact may accompany a person who is applying for self-exclusion and provide moral support during the process.
- Seek guidance for themselves. Caring for someone whose gambling is causing difficulty can be stressful. Australian public bodies provide guidance and support for family members and others affected; please see Section 9 below.
Limits on What We Can Share
While we are committed to supporting trusted contacts, Australian privacy law limits the personal information we may disclose about a guest without their consent. Our team will explain these boundaries clearly and will focus conversations on the support options available rather than on disclosing personal details about any individual guest.
9. Public Support Resources in Australia
A range of publicly funded support services is available in Australia for anyone affected by gambling-related difficulties — whether as a person who gambles or as a family member or other person affected by someone else's gambling. These services are independent of Elmariscourt and are available at no cost.
We encourage any guest or visitor who is concerned about gambling to contact Australian public authorities and community support services directly. These services offer:
- Confidential information and guidance by telephone, online and in person.
- Support for family members and other affected persons.
- Financial counselling assistance to help manage gambling-related financial difficulties.
- Access to state and territory self-exclusion schemes where available.
- Referral to further community and peer support options.
Information about publicly available Australian gambling support services is published by the relevant federal, state and territory authorities and may be found through official government websites, local community services directories, or by contacting our gaming management team who can point you toward current local resources.
Elmariscourt displays current responsible gambling information, including contact details for local support services, within the gaming areas of our property as required by law. Physical brochures and information materials are available from our gaming management team at any time.
10. Our Trained Staff
All Elmariscourt staff who work in or adjacent to gaming areas receive training in responsible gambling awareness and in the procedures set out in this policy. This training covers:
- Recognising behavioural indicators that may suggest a guest is experiencing difficulty with their gambling.
- Approaching guests respectfully, sensitively and without judgement.
- Providing accurate information about our self-exclusion programme and responsible gambling materials.
- Referring guests to relevant public support resources.
- Refusing entry or service in accordance with age verification and exclusion obligations.

Any guest who would like to speak privately with a member of our gaming management team — about their own gambling or about another person — may approach any staff member on the gaming floor and ask to be directed to the relevant manager. Conversations of this nature are given priority and are conducted away from the gaming floor in a private setting.
